Mansa Devi - Har Ki Pauri - Chandi Devi
Haridwar, located in the foothills of the Shivaliks and on the banks of River Ganga, is an important pilgrimage site for the Hindus. When the Ganga leaves the mountains and enters the plains, Haridwar is the first major town on the plains. Though the Ganges does not lose its rapids completely, nevertheless it becomes very quiet and calm here.

The water is clean and carries the religious sanction of purifying the soul of all its sins which, in turn, opens the gateway to Nirvana. Consequently, people bathe on the numerous ghats built on the river shores, some travelling great distances for this purpose only.
Haridwar has earned fame as being the place which has been blessed by the trinity of the Lords Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is also one of the major Shaktipeeths. Down the ages, Haridwar has purified the mind, the body and the soul of people not only in spiritual or religious terms but also since it has emerged as a major learning centre for the arts, science and culture. This place has maintained the ancient Gurukul tradition of teaching with fervour.
Since ages Haridwar has been a source of Ayurvedic medicines and herbal remedies. One of the first towns to be developed on Ganges, Haridwar is still lush and green with forest cover and trees. With the Rajaji Park being established in the in the vicinity, Haridwar is also a destination for the wildlife and nature lovers.
Always beautiful, the city looks especially enchanting in the evening when the ghats become stunningly ablaze with light and colour with thousands of diyas (clay lamps) and marigolds floating in the waters of Ganges.
Prime Attractions
Mansa Devi
Mansa Devi temple is also located on top of a hill, called the Bilwa Parvat. The temple can be reached by the ropeway or one can take the normal trekking route to the top. The top of the hill gives you an excellent view of Haridwar. The temple is surrounded by many shops and you have to follow the line to have a glimpse of the Goddess. The trolley ropeway route to Chandi Devi and Mansa Devi, is very exciting.
Har Ki Pauri
Har-Ki-Pauri (the footstep of God) ghat, also known as the Brahmakund, is one of the most sacred pilgrim places. It is said to be built by Vikramaditya in memory of his brother, Bhartrihari. In the evening, a 'Maha Aarti' is performed on this ghat. The floral diyas which float on the ghat, in the twilight, creates an impression of stars being brought in the river water.
This ghat is suppossed to be at the precise spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the plains. Popular belief is that if one take bath in this ghat, it will wash away all your sins. During the day time the ghat is full of Pandas and Pujaris. There are many hotels, guesthouses and temples on this ghat.
Chandi Devi
Chandi Devi temple is situated on the top of a hill, called the Neel Parvat, which is on the other side of the river Ganga. The temple was constructed by Suchat Singh, King of Kashmir, in 1929 A.D.
It is a 3 km trek from the Chandi Ghat. The story goes that Chanda-Munda, the army chief of the Demons Shumbh-Nishumbh were killed by Goddess Chandi hence, the name Chandi Devi. It also said that the original statute of Goddess Chandi was established by Adi Shankaracharya in 8 th century A.D. Now a ropeway has been built, which takes you to the top. Chandi Devi is 6 km from the main town of Haridwar.
